Gonzaga Falls to Ohio State in Rematch, 8-2

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Gonzaga Baseball couldn't get on the board until late in its weekend finale with Ohio State Sunday at Brazell Field, falling 8-2 to split the two-game series with the Buckeyes.

Despite a 3-for-4 outing from Sam Stem, who scored one run, the Bulldogs (1-7) only mustered two runs on six hits a day after putting up 16 on 19 hits against Grand Canyon. No GU batter reached base until the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes drew 10 walks to go with eight hits, capitalizing on GU's free passes with a three-run fourth and a four-run seventh after initially breaking the scoreless tie with a solo homer.

Tommy Eisenstat scored the other run to lead three other Zags who picked up a hit, with Hank Dunn picking up a pair of RBI with his first career hit in a GU uniform.

Six different GU pitchers took the mound, with RHP Ty Buckner (5 H, 4 ER, 2 K) going 3 ⅓ innings in the start and keeping OSU scoreless for his first two innings of work. RHP Jack Moffit (2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K) and RHP Jake Rutherford (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K) were sharp in relief, with Rutherford producing six consecutive outs and tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth to calm the Buckeyes' bats. LHP Matthew Mueller (0 H, 0 ER, 1 K) tossed the final inning, getting out of a bases-loaded situation with the score unchanged.

The Zags scored both of their runs after back-to-back singles from Eisenstat and Stem, with Dunn coming through with a pinch-hit single to score them both after a wild pitch got Stem to scoring position.
