WTEN: Zags Battle, Fall to Louisiana 4-3

Gonzaga plays Tulane on Saturday

LAFAYETTE, La. -- This afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team played a nonconference dual match against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Coming into the event, the Zags had won their previous four matches, and five of their last six.

Opening with a competitive doubles competition, Gonzaga battled against a very talented Louisiana squad. On court three, Louisiana's Lucie Raquin and Cristina Tchanichev earned a 6-3 victory over Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan. Louisiana clinched the doubles point when Momoko Yoshimura and Angel Santiago defeated Gonzaga's Rose Hayes and Kianna Oda by a score of 6-4 in the No.2 spot.

With Louisiana having already clinched the doubles point, the court one match between Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska and Louisiana's Carla Urchoeguia and Angelique Berrat went unfinished, ending with a score of 6-5.

As the singles competition began, Gonzaga tied the match when Sosnowska defeated Raquin 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Louisiana reclaimed the lead when Urchoeguia clinched a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Broerman. For the second time in the event, Gonzaga tied the match when Hayes defeated Monnoyer 6-2, 6-3 in the No.6 spot.

With the singles competition tied entering the final three singles match of the day, every match went into a third set. Gonzaga took the lead when Aitken clinched a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 court five victory against Yoshimura. Louisiana tied the competition when Berrat won her back-and-forth match against Oda, ending with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 on court three. In the No.4 spot, Louisiana clinched the team victory when Tchanichev defeated Sloan 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

Up Next: The Gonzaga women's tennis team will conclude their road trip in Louisiana on Saturday, when they are scheduled to face Tulane on March 18th at 10 am. The Zags will not return to the Stevens Center until March 29th, when they will play Santa Clara at 4 pm in the conference home opener.

Records: The season record for the Zags moves to 8-6 following today's match. For Louisiana, the win improves their record on the year to 5-5. Today's match also marks the first meeting between Louisiana and Gonzaga in program history, making the historical record between the teams 0-1 in favor of the Ragin' Cajuns.
