PROVO, Utah --  Earlier this afternoon, Gonzaga opened conference play by facing BYU in a dual match and fell 6-1. Today's match marks the 13th meeting between the Zags and Cougars in program history, and is only the second time since 2019 that the Zags have played in Provo.
 
BYU's Kara Wheatley and Helen Jiao opened the doubles competition with a dominant 6-1 court three victory against Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan. In the No.2 spot, BYU clinched the doubles point when Bobo Huang and Tina Li defeated Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Rose Hayes by a score of 6-1.
 
With BYU having already clinched the doubles point, the court one match between Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska and BYU's Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon went unfinished, ending with a score of 2-5.
 
Transitioning to the singles competition, BYU expanded their lead when Dunyon earned a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Sloan. Shortly after, Li picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win over Oda on court three. In the No.1 spot, BYU clinched the team victory when Huang defeated Broerman by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
 
Gonzaga earned their only team point of the day when Sosnowska clinched a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 court two win against Astle. On court five, Moore earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Aitken. In the final singles match of the day, Wheatley defeated Hayes, ending with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
 
Up Next: After today's loss, the Zags will travel to California to face the University of San Diego on March 26 at 12 p.m. Gonzaga's conference home opener is scheduled for March 29, when the Zags will battle Santa Clara at 4 p.m. in the Stevens Center.

Records: The record on the year for the Zags moves to 9-7 with today's loss. For the Cougars, their season record improves to 9-5 with the victory. The historical record between Gonzaga and BYU moves to 5-8 in favor of the Cougars.
