Timme Named Malone Award Finalist

Zag senior one of five up for top power forward in the nation

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Gonzaga's Drew Timme was named one of five finalists for the 2023 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday.
 
Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its ninth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
 
The five finalists for the 2023 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award are Timme (Gonzaga), Bryce Hopkins (Providence), Trayce Jackson-Davis (Indiana), Kris Murray (Iowa), and Ąžuolas Tubelis (Arizona).
 
Timme, a three-time All-American, was named First Team All-Conference the last two seasons, after being named All-Freshman in 2019-20. He tops the West Coast Conference averaging 20.9 points per game, and second shooting 62.4 percent from the field. The senior is fifth in the WCC grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game, and seventh blocking 0.9 shots per game.
 
Timme is third in the nation with 272 made field goals and is sixth with 689 points. He is now Gonzaga's all-time leading scorer and has 2,210 points during his four seasons at GU. The Dallas native's 859 career rebounds rank sixth and his 109 blocks are eighth. Timme owns the record for most made field goals in GU history with 869, and his 62.1 career field goal percentage is third. He boasts a record of 118-12 (.901) in his Gonzaga appearances, going 58-4 (.934) in conference play.
 
Fans can support their favorite player by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, March 10, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
 
This month, the finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
 
The winner of the 2023 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
 
Previous winners of the Karl Malone Award are Keegan Murray, Iowa (2022), Drew Timme, Gonzaga (2021), Obi Toppin, Dayton (2020), Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016) and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).
