MTEN: Zags Close Regular Season with a 4-2 Win Over Portland

The Bulldogs await other conference results for seeding for the WCC Tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team concluded their regular season with a conference dual match against Portland. Entering the match, the Zags had only defeated the Pilots once in program history, which occurred during the 2019 season.
 
Today's match opened with one of the most riveting doubles competitions of the season. On court one, Portland's Sema Pankin and Eleftherios Neos clinched a 6-4 win over Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Oliver Andersson. Gonzaga tied the doubles competition when Leon Roider and Arthus Bassetiere earned a 6-4 court two victory against Portland's Fabian Gusic and Nikolas Tvedt. In the No.3 spot, Gonzaga freshman Gus Krauel came up clutch by earning the match-winning point in his doubles match with Tom Hann, defeating Portland's Cade Fernando and Issa Yoshida by a score of 6-4.
 
Transitioning to the singles competition, Portland tied the match when Neos earned a 6-1, 6-3 court two win over Andersson. Gonzaga reclaimed the lead when Bassetiere picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory against Tvedt in the No.3 spot. Shortly after, Gonzaga expanded their lead when Roider defeated Yoshida by a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the No.5 spot.
 
Facing Pankin, Trkulja battled, but lost his court one match by a score of 6-4, 6-3. On court five, in the last home singles match of his career, Hann clinched the team victory for Gonzaga by earning a 7-5, 6-1 win over Yoshida.
 
With Gonzaga having already clinched the team victory, the court six match between Krauel and Gusic went unfinished, ending with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 2-5.
 
Up next: Today's victory against Portland ends the regular season for the Gonzaga men's tennis team. The Zags will now have to wait to see whether or not they qualify for the WCC Championships, which begin on April 27.
 
Records: With the win, the regular season record for the Zags ends at 9-11. For Portland, their record on the year moves to 11-9.

Head Coach D.J. Gurule
Following this season, Coach D.J. Gurule is now third in total wins, with twenty-seven, and third in winning percentage, with an impressive .613 winning percentage, in his first two seasons with the men's tennis team.
 
Sasha Trkulja
At the conclusion of his junior year, Trkulja is now tenth in total singles wins, with 49 victories, and third in court one singles wins, with 16 victories, in Gonzaga men's tennis history. Also, the Trkulja and Hollingworth doubles pair is second for the most career doubles victories by a single pair, with 31 total wins.
 
Matthew Hollingworth
Hollingworth's senior season saw move into fifth for the most career singles wins, with 62, and the sixth-best winning percentage in Gonzaga history, with an astounding .639 winning percentage in his singles matches. Also, Hollingworth now has the second-most dual wins in Gonzaga history, with thirty-nine total dual singles victories.
 
Tom Hann
Hann's final season with the Zags saw him move into fifth place for career conference singles wins, with nine conference victories, and fourth for individual doubles winning percentage in a season, with an impressive .688 doubles winning percentage. Also, Hann is now fourth for the most court five singles wins in a season, with seven total court five victories this year.
 
Leon Roider
Following this season, Roider now has the third-most doubles wins in a season, with 20 total doubles victories. Also, Roider now maintains the highest individual doubles winning percentage in a single season, ending the year with a doubles winning percentage of 80.0 percent. The pair of Roider and Bassetiere also earned the third-most court two doubles wins in a single season, with 11 this year, and have the best doubles winning percentage in a single season, with 73.3 percent.
 
Pablo Gomez Galvan
At the end of his junior year, Gomez Galvan now has the most career court six victories in Gonzaga men's tennis history, with 16 total court six wins. Also, the Gomez Galvan and Hann doubles pairing now have the most conference wins by a double pair in a single season, with five conference victories, and are now tied for the second-most court three doubles wins in a single season, with 10 victories.
 
Oliver Andersson
Andersson's excellent season now places him seventh in total career singles wins in Gonzaga men's tennis history, with 56 singles victories across his career.
