Sooners Down Zags 5-2 in Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga outhit Oklahoma 10-9 in its nonconference series opener Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex in a game that was tied at 1-1 with two outs in the seventh, but the Sooners (27-22, 10-11 Big 12) stranded 13 Zag runners on base and put up four runs over the final three frames to hand the Bulldogs (18-28, 14-10 WCC) a 5-2 loss.

RHP Owen Wild held OU to just one run in a 4 ⅔-inning start, striking out five while being tagged for seven hits and one walk. RHP Ty Buckner retired six consecutive batters in relief, and struck out four, but walked four more and was tagged for the loss after giving up two runs on a two-out single – the only hit he allowed during his time on the mound. LHP Matthew Mueller (1.2 IP) entered the game with bases loaded and one out on the board, striking out the first two batters he faced to keep the deficit at two, but the Sooners pushed across two more runs off of him in the top of the ninth.

Mason Marenco went 2-for-4 with both of GU's runs and Connor Coballes drove in both with two knocks of his own to lead GU's 10-hit night, with Dylan Johnson adding three more and Enzo Apodaca, Brian Kalmer and Tommy Eisenstat picking up one each. Tonight was the 20th game this season that the Zags cracked double-digit hits.

After getting into some early trouble with the bases loaded in the first, Wild retired three of the next four he faced in the second to regain momentum and the Zags plated their first run in the bottom of the frame. After back-to-back singles from Marenco and Johnson, Coballes connected on an infield knock that plated Marenco for a 1-0 lead, but Douthit struck out the next two he faced to halt the advance.

With six outs left to make up the difference after OU jumped out to a 3-1 lead, Marenco got on base in leadoff with a wild pitch despite striking out, reaching scoring position on a grounder as the order turned over. Coballes made good on the advance with his second RBI single of the day – a gap-finder up the middle that went all the way to center field – in the next at-bat to bring him home and cut the deficit to one, but two more punchouts stranded the tying run aboard and the Zags didn't get another runner on base through nine.
