SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Gonzaga Baseball couldn't bounce back from a four-homer day from Santa Clara in Friday's Game Two of GU's final West Coast Conference series at Stephen Schott Stadium, falling 12-1 after picking up six hits but stranding nine on base.
The Bulldogs (18-32, 14-12 WCC), who have already clinched a spot in the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas May 24-27, have a chance to put up one more win in conference play in Saturday's series finale.
The Broncos (30-18, 16-10 WCC) chased RHP
Jacob Rutherford (3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) from the game thanks to a pair of multi-run homers from Efrain Manzo and Eamonn Lance that gave them a 6-0 lead in the third, but drove in four more runs on two more big flies in the fifth and sixth off
Kai Francis (1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 2 BB) that extended the margin to 10-0.
GU got its only run across in the seventh thanks to a pair of doubles from Johnson and Pinales, with Pinales reaching third on a grounder and Apodaca drawing a walk to threaten further before a popup from Kalmer ended the frame.
Tommy Eisenstat finished with two singles to lead a six-hit night for GU, but was left on base twice.
Sam Stem and
Donovan Ratfield also added a hit each.
RHP
Nate Weeldreyer (2.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) pitched the rest of the way, being tagged for two runs in the seventh but striking his way out of the eighth with two runners aboard to keep SCU off the board before three consecutive grounders from GU ended the game.
