SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Baseball couldn't keep up with a four-homer night from Saint Mary's in its West Coast Conference series opener on Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex, falling 12-3.
The Bulldogs (17-26, 13-9 WCC) tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI grounder from
Sam Stem, but the Gaels (19-21, 12-10) put up four runs in the next frame to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish through the rest of the game, racking up 13 hits on GU starter
Owen Wild (7.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 10 K, 2 BB) and reliever
Payton Graham (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 K). Wild cracked double-digit punchouts for the fourth time this season, but surrendered 10 runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits, three of which were homers.
Brian Kalmer finished with two hits and an RBI to lead an eight-hit outing for GU, with
Connor Coballes,
Enzo Apodaca,
Sam Stem,
Tommy Eisenstat,
Dylan Johnson and
Mason Marenco adding a knock each. Johnson drove in
Savier Pinales all the way from first with an RBI double, but the Zags didn't get back on the board again until Kalmer's second single of the day in the ninth brought in Marenco.
