WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Gonzaga women's soccer opened the regular season with a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over Houston Christian in Game 1 of the 2023 Outrigger Soccer Kickoff Thursday.
 
In the first-ever meeting between the programs, GU used three first half goals and a solid defensive effort to pick up the win. A pair of Zag freshman scored in their collegiate debuts, and Gonzaga outshot the Huskies 14-7.
 
Kate Doyle opened the scoring in the 17^th minute. The redshirt junior recorded her 10^th career goal in her 31^st appearance for the Bulldogs. Doyle finished with a game-high three shots.
 
In the 25^th minute, Katelyn Rigg found the back of the net in her freshman debut. Marissa Garcia was credited with her fifth career assist. Just before halftime in the 41^st minute, freshman Shelby Runje gave GU a 3-0 lead.
 
Lauren Towne and Faith Fenwick split time in the Gonzaga net, each making a save. Chloe Bagshaw had one save for HCU. Twenty-one Zags entered the season-opening match.
