WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Gonzaga women's soccer opened the regular season with a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over Houston Christian in Game 1 of the 2023 Outrigger Soccer Kickoff Thursday.
In the first-ever meeting between the programs, GU used three first half goals and a solid defensive effort to pick up the win. A pair of Zag freshman scored in their collegiate debuts, and Gonzaga outshot the Huskies 14-7.
Kate Doyle opened the scoring in the 17
th minute. The redshirt junior recorded her 10
th career goal in her 31
st appearance for the Bulldogs. Doyle finished with a game-high three shots.
In the 25
th minute,
Katelyn Rigg found the back of the net in her freshman debut.
Marissa Garcia was credited with her fifth career assist. Just before halftime in the 41
st minute, freshman
Shelby Runje gave GU a 3-0 lead.
Lauren Towne and
Faith Fenwick split time in the Gonzaga net, each making a save. Chloe Bagshaw had one save for HCU. Twenty-one Zags entered the season-opening match.
