WSOC Finds the Net Nine Times in Win

Gonzaga’s nine goals are second-most scored in program history

SPOKANE, Wash. – After scoring seven goals in its last game, Gonzaga women's soccer found the back of the net nine times in a 9-2 victory over Weber State Thursday. It was the regular season home opener for the Zags (3-0-0).
 
Gonzaga opens the season 3-0-0 for the first time in program history, and its nine goals in the win are the second-most in program history. It was the most goals in a single game for the Bulldogs since a 10-0 victory over Whitman on Sept. 3, 2000.
 
The Zags outshot Weber State 29-3, with a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal. The 29 shots were the most in a game since GU had 30 in a 1-0 victory at Arizona in 2021. The Bulldogs took all 13 corner kicks in the match against Weber State (0-3-0) Thursday.
 
For the second straight game, Gonzaga's Giana Riley scored twice and recorded an assist. Freshman Shelby Runje and Marissa Garcia both scored twice as well.
 
Garcia opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest off an assist from Riley. Kate Doyle scored her fourth goal of the young season two minutes later. Kelsey Oyler was credited with an assist. Maddie Kemp scored her 16th career goal in the 18th minute, moving her to seventh all-time at GU.
 
Garcia scored her second goal, third of the season, in the 19th minute with another assist to Oyler. It was Oyler's 13th career assist, moving her to fourth in program history. Riley found the back of the net in the 27th minute, and Doyle was given the assist. Freshmen Katelyn Rigg and Makayla Werner connected for a score in the 40th minute.
 
Weber State's Sayler Schlosser recorded a brace with goals in the 54th and 62nd minutes. In the 58th minute, Riley scored with an assist from Kemp. Kemp rose to seventh all-time in career points at Gonzaga with 43. Runje capped the scoring in the 83rd and 88th minutes.
 
Gonzaga welcomes Nebraska to Luger Field for the first time Sunday at 1 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the programs, with the Zags winning the first meeting 2-1 at Nebraska in 2019. The Cornhuskers (2-0-1) cruised to a 6-0 victory at Eastern Washington Thursday.
