SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga men's and women's track teams split squads Friday and Saturday, sending 20 runners to the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Facility while the remaining athletes competed at The Podium in the
Inland Northwest Invitational. The men opened the two-day meet with the 3000m Friday evening where
Wil Smith (7:49.67) earned a program indoor record in the fastest heat, becoming the eighth Bulldog to notch a PR on the day.
Action continued on Saturday, as
Ellie Armbruster picked up another program record, this time in the 800m. Her time of 2:11.58 edged
Willow Collins' 2:12.48 record which she set two weeks ago at The Podium. Armbruster now owns five separate program indoor records, and the Zags have collectively marked five out of the top six new indoor 800m program records this season alone.
The Mile City event, perhaps the meet's biggest stage of the weekend, featured 39 total collegiate heats across the men's and women's division. Collins was the first Bulldog on the track for the women, earning a comfortable victory in her heat with a program fifth-best time of 4:48.59, a three-second PR set earlier this season.
Rosina Machu took part in the second-fastest heat of the afternoon, breaking the program mile record in 4:40.50, beating the previous best by nearly five seconds. It marks the second record broken for Machu during this indoor season.
Just 19 hours after breaking the 3000m record, Smith returned for the men's mile looking to break four minutes for the second time in his career. In the second-fastest heat, Smith ran a 3:58.81 to improve his personal and program record set last winter in The Podium. It marks the best double in Gonzaga history, another notch on Smith's impressive career.
Nick Braz,
Mason Kissell,
Ryan Mitchell, and
Sam Geiger each won their respective heats following Smith's new record, with Geiger's 4:07.10 becoming the seventh-fastest time in program history. Overall, GU picked up ten PRs in Seattle while breaking four program records on a historic weekend inside Dempsey.
