Rigg scores in ninth minute for Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's soccer and Saint Mary's tied 1-1 at Luger Field Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (5-6-2, 1-2-1 West Coast Conference) and SMC played an evenly matched game for 90 minutes. GU had a 13-12 edge in shots, including 7-5 in shots on goal, but the Gaels possessed the ball for 52 percent of the match. The Zags took four of the seven corner kicks in the match.
Katelyn Rigg opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Gonzaga. She found the back of the net for the second time this season on a strike with an assist to Amelia Severn. It was Severn's fifth assist of the season.
After Saint Mary's (4-6-3, 1-2-2 WCC) outshot the Bulldogs in the first half 6-5, Tessa Salvestrin volleyed in a shot in the 58th minute off a pass from Khalia Gathright. It was Salvestrin's seventh goal of the season and she finished with a match-high six shots.
Gonzaga forced Kate Plachy into six saves in the SMC net. Michaela McCollum made her first start for the Bulldogs and made three saves.
The Bulldogs remain at home and welcome Washington State (5-4-5, 2-1-2) next Saturday at 6 p.m. The Cougars tied Portland in Pullman Saturday, 1-1. Next Saturday's match will be broadcast on ESPN Plus, with live stats on GoZags.com.
