SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – San Francisco volleyball improved to 5-1 in West Coast Conference play with a 3-0 win over Gonzaga on Thursday inside War Memorial at The Sobrato Center. After fending off a late GU surge in the first set, USF pulled away for a 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 sweep over the Bulldogs.
San Francisco (12-6, 5-1 WCC) raided the Gonzaga (1-15, 0-6 WCC) front line with kills from 11 different players as the Dons outhit the Zags 42-25 on Thursday. Shannon Knight and Michalina Rola were the leaders for USF with six kills each. Rola earned five of those in the first set alone as San Francisco pulled ahead by as many as nine before a late Gonzaga run brought the score within five.
Maggie Rickert and
Raechelle Dykstra were the GU leaders in kills on Thursday, posting six each.
Taylor Walsh added four while a trio of others each chipped in three. Rickert also led the Zags with 12 digs on the night, including eight in the opening set.
After entering the match for the first time in set two, San Francisco's Knight picked up five of her match-leading six kills in the third frame, including the final blow to cap off the Dons' seventh win in their last eight matches. USF is now tied for second in the WCC standings, just one-half of a game behind Washington State (6-1).
