Bulldogs Battle to 5-3 Win at San Diego

Le scores game winner in the 86th minute

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Gonzaga women's soccer picked up a thrilling 5-3 win at San Diego Wednesday. It was the Bulldogs' seventh straight victory over USD.
 
Chelsea Le scored the game winning goal in the 86th minute. Her fourth career goal, and second of the season, came unassisted on a strike to the top corner of the far post from distance past the outstretched Torero keeper.
 
The Zags (5-5-1, 1-1-0 West Coast Conference) scored their most goals of the season behind a 27-19 advantage in shots. GU held a 14-9 edge in shots on goal, and 8-4 in corner kicks.
 
Marissa Garcia scored two goals and recorded an assist for the Zags in the victory. She moved into sixth in program history with her 19th and 20th career goals and 50th career point.
 
San Diego (2-6-4, 0-2-1 WCC) opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a goal from Sara Evans and assist to Tamia Graham.
 
The Bulldogs responded in the 15th minute. Emelia Warta found the back of the net for the first time this season and Garcia was credited with the assist. Garcia scored her first goal of the season seven minutes later. Amelia Severn had the assist.
 
After being tied 2-2 at halftime, Warta recorded an assist on Kylie Jones' goal in the 57th minute. USD equalized again in the 76th minute on a Kylie Smith goal.
 
Garcia capped off the scoring in the final minute. Severn made a long pass to Garcia who kicked in the goal in an empty net following a USD corner kick that pulled the Torero keeper out.
 
San Diego's Ilise Medrano made eight saves, while Lauren Towne had six saves in the GU net. Le led all players with six shots in the match.
 
The Zags return home and host No. 13 Pepperdine (7-2-2, 1-0-0) Saturday at 6 p.m. The Waves won their WCC opener over Washington State Wednesday, 3-2. Saturday's match will be broadcast on ESPN Plus, with live stats on GoZags.com.
