PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State volleyball improved to 7-2 in West Coast Conference play with a convincing win over Gonzaga inside Bohler Gym on Saturday. After pulling away in a close first set, the Cougars carried the momentum into a 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs, 25-18, 25-13, 25-10.
Washington State (12-6, 7-2 WCC) hit .409 as a team on Saturday, led by Katy Ryan (nine kills, .444%), Taryn Vrieling (eight kills, .412%), and Lucie Blazkova (eight kills, .438%). For Gonzaga (1-18, 0-9 WCC),
Maggie Rickert dropped seven kills to lead the Bulldog offense, followed right behind by
Autumn Larson with six.
WSU and GU battled early in the first, but after the Cougars opened a six point lead, the Zags needed an answer.
Jody Smith and
Raechelle Dykstra eached picked up kills as Gonzaga shrunk the Washington State lead to just three. In the end, Vrieling and Ryan got the final word as WSU ran away with the 25-18 win.
In the second set, Ryan continued to roll, adding five kills in a 5-for-7 effort with just one error. In total, the Cougars notched 15 in set two to extend their lead to 2-0. The third set was almost entirely controlled by Washington State, who made quick work with a 25-10 win to complete the sweep. Blazkova was 4-for-5 for WSU in set three, including the final kill which she dumped over the net after an errant Gonzaga pass.
