Gonzaga Falls to Portland in Three Sets

The Zags return home on Nov. 7 to face Saint Mary’s in the Martin Centre

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland volleyball bounced back after a five-set loss to Pacific on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep over Gonzaga on Saturday inside the Chiles Center. The Pilots earned comfortable wins in the first two sets before edging out the Zags in set three to capture the 25-19, 25-13, 25-23 win.

Portland (11-10, 4-7 WCC) jumped back above the .500 mark with their win on Saturday, recording a team hitting percentage of .323 in their sweep over Gonzaga (1-20, 0-11 WCC). Elin Larsson was the lone player in double figures, notching ten kills to lead the Pilots. For the Zags, Raechelle Dykstra swung nine kills and added six digs, two blocks and two service aces to her stat line.

After back-to-back kills from Portland's Larsson midway through the first, Taylor Walsh picked up a kill and a service ace to put Gonzaga back in front at 16-15. Four straight Pilot points forced a GU timeout with Portland now leading 19-16, but the Zags could not get closer than two as UP held on for the opening-set win.

Gonzaga and Portland battled early in the second, but a 14-2 Pilots' run quickly put things out of reach as they finished off a 25-13 win.

Trailing by as many as five to open the third set, the Bulldogs fought their way back to eventually tie the score at 18 after a 6-0 run. Hayley Ogden picked up two kills late, and Dykstra added a kill and an ace with Portland at match point, but Gonzaga came up just short of tying the score at 24, instead falling 25-23 in set three.
