WTEN: Zags Drop to New Mexico, 4-3

The Bulldogs return to the Stevens Center tomorrow at noon

Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. -- Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team hosted the University of New Mexico in a nonconference dual match. This marks the first match between the Zags and Lobos in program history.
 
New Mexico's Hsuan Huang and Maria Sodre opened the doubles competition by picking up a 6-2 court two win over Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Brooke Bittner. Shortly after, New Mexico clinched the doubles point when Leonie Hoppe and Katherine Jhang claimed a 6-4 court one victory against Gonzaga's Emily Robertson and Kianna Oda.
 
With the Lobos having already clinched the doubles point, the court three match between Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen and Caroline Wernli and New Mexico's Bente and Maud Vandeputte went unfinished, ending with a score of 4-5.
 
Transitioning to the singles competition, Gonzaga tied the match when Robertson clinched a 6-3, 6-3 court one win against New Mexico's Sarah O'Connor. Shortly after, Huang picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Aitken in the No.3 spot. New Mexico's lead expanded when Bente Vandeputte defeated Gonzaga's Lia Espinal by a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the No.6 spot.
 
On court five, Wernli picked up an impressive 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Hoppe. Gonzaga tied the match on court four, as Nielsen earned a gritty 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win against Maud Vandeputte. In the final match of the day, the Lobos clinched the team victory when Jhang defeated Oda by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the No.2 spot.
 
Up Next: Following today's loss, the Gonzaga women's tennis team will face Seattle University on February 11th at 12 pm in the Steven Center.

Records: With today's result, the season record for Gonzaga drops to 2-3. For New Mexico, their record on the year improves to 4-0 with the win. The historical record between the Zags and Lobos also moves to 0-1.
