LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cody Schrier's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave #22 UCLA the lead late as the Bruins rallied to beat Gonzaga 8-7 on Friday night inside Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Mulivai Levu's fifth-inning home run along with pairs of hits from Schrier and Roch Cholowsky carried UCLA (1-0) to the victory on opening day.
Hudson Shupe had an impressive debut for Gonzaga (0-1), tallying three hits and three RBIs including a home run on the first pitch of the game.
Max Coupe also picked up a multi-hit game with two of his own, driving in one with a run scored.
Cody Delvecchio (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win for UCLA, entering the game in the top of the eighth before the Bruins took the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Daniel Sotelo (0-1, 27.00 ERA) was charged with the loss, despite picking up three strikeouts early in his Gonzaga debut.
Junior transfer
Liam Paddack started for the Bulldogs, picking up five strikeouts over three innings and surrendering three earned runs. Luke Jewett was the starter for UCLA, lasting five innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits and striking out four.
After Shupe's leadoff homer in the first, the Zags extended their lead to 3-0 after plating a pair in the top of the third. UCLA would respond in the bottom half to cut the GU lead back to just one. One run in the fourth, followed by Levu's two-run home run in the fifth briefly gave UCLA a 5-3 lead.
Gonzaga would respond in the sixth, posting three runs on singles from Coupe and Shupe. An insurance run in the eighth on a passed ball gave the Bulldogs a two-run lead with just six outs to go. However, a UCLA rally in the bottom of the eighth completed by Schrier's RBI single propelled the Bruins to their third-straight opening day victory.
