LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The 22nd-ranked UCLA baseball team scored ten runs on 15 hits en route to a 10-3 win over Gonzaga in game two on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The 3-4-5 hitters for UCLA (2-0) combined to go 9-for-13 with six RBIs and six runs scored, while the pitching staff held Gonzaga (0-2) to just two earned runs on eight hits and striking out seven.
Moving up a spot in the Gonzaga lineup after a 2-for-4 line in Friday's opener,
Max Coupe continued his hot hitting Saturday, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Vincent Temesvary also picked up a pair of hits despite neither of them coming around to score.
Gonzaga's lone two RBIs came on a
Josh Hankins RBI single in the fourth and a
Donovan Ratfield home run in the eighth. Ratfield's homer marked his first of the season and just the fourth of his Gonzaga career. The Zags' other run came in the seventh on an infield single followed by a throwing error, allowing
Sam Stem to score.
UCLA's Finn McIlroy (1-0, 1.80 ERA) earned the win in his first start as a Bruin, lasting five innings and giving up just one run on five hits and striking out three.
Payton Graham (0-1, 33.75 ERA) was dealt the loss after recording just four outs and giving up five runs.
Jordan Hamberg was able to slow the UCLA bats, completing 3 2/3 innings and surrendering just two runs and picking up five strikeouts.
Miles Gosztola was also impressive in his Gonzaga debut, throwing two innings of near-shutout baseball, minus a solo home run by Cody Schrier in the sixth.
