LOS ANGELES, Calif. – No. 22 UCLA completed its season-opening sweep of Gonzaga with a 6-0 win Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After a come-from-behind, 8-7 victory in Friday's opener, UCLA picked up a 10-3 win on Saturday after leading wire-to-wire.
UCLA (3-0) got five shutout innings from starting pitcher Michael Barnett (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who earned the win Sunday after surrendering just three hits, striking out six and walking zero. For Gonzaga (0-3),
Nate DeSchryver (0-1, 27.00 ERA) was charged with the loss, giving up three earned runs on two hits, one walk and one strikeout in one inning of play.
After a three-run first inning by the Bruins, including the second-straight first inning two-run homer from Duce Gourson, Gonzaga's bullpen held UCLA to just three runs on five hits and six strikeouts. It was the walks that hurt the Zags as the Bruins took advantage of 13 free passes on the day.
The bottom third of the Gonzaga order was active in Sunday's finale, as the trio of
Josh Hankins,
Gage Mestas, and
Peyton Miller combined to go 5-for-9 on the afternoon. UCLA's production continued to be the top of the lineup, as Dean West, Gourson, and Cody Schrier combined for four hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
