NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Gonzaga faced off with #6 Vanderbilt in game one of a three-game stint in Music City Friday evening. In the series opener, Vanderbilt came away with a resounding 12-2 victory, posting a dozen runs on 14 hits.
For Vanderbilt (4-2), it marked their second-straight win after they secured a mid-week victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. Gonzaga (0-4) struck first in the second after loading the bases with two outs. On a full-count and with the runners taking off,
Peyton Miller poked a single through the right side of the infield to give the Zags an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for GU, the pitching for Vanderbilt settled in for six scoreless innings, giving up just three more hits on the day.
The Commodores picked up their first run in the bottom of the second, with Bulger sending a ball out to straight-away center field for a solo shot. A four-run fourth and a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and eighth highlighted VU's offensive outburst, with Holcomb's two-run homer ending it early in the eighth.
Starter Carter Holton (1-0) earned the win for Vanderbilt after five innings of work, surrendering just two runs on two hits, striking out eight and walking two.
Liam Paddack (0-1) was charged with the loss for Gonzaga, exiting in the fifth inning with one on and nobody out.
