SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team continued their dual nonconference schedule by facing Washington State earlier this afternoon. The Zags picked up their first victory in program history against Washington State back in 2019, when they clinched an impressive 5-2 win over the Cougars in Pullman.
Opening with the doubles competition, Washington State's Hania Abouelseaad and Martina Markov earned a 6-4 court three win over Gonzaga's
Brooke Bittner and
Caroline Wernli. In the No.2 spot, Washington State clinched the doubles point when Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom defeated Gonzaga's
Emily Robertson and
Ella Nielsen by a score of 6-2. The doubles competition concluded when Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse claimed a 6-3 victory against Gonzaga's
Kianna Oda and
Tiegan Aitken on court one.
Washington State expanded their lead in the singles competition, as Alvarez Sande clinched a 6-3, 6-3 win against Robertson on court one. Shortly after, Abouelsaad earned a 6-4, 6-3 court five victory over Wernli. In the No.4 spot, Washington State clinched the team victory when Kumhom defeated Aitken, winning by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Gonzaga continued to battle in the remaining three singles matches, with each match requiring a tiebreaker to decide the winner. The Zags earned their first team point of the day on court two, as Oda picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win over Nakagawa. On court three, Nielsen battled, but lost 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 in competitive fashion. In the final match of the day, Markov claimed a 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 victory against Bittner.
Up Next: Following today's match, the Gonzaga women's tennis team is scheduled to host Fresno State on Sunday, March 3rd at 11 am. The Zags will conclude their nonconference dual schedule on March 10th, when the Zags will travel to play California State Fullerton.
