Baseball Opens WCC Play at Home Against LMU This Weekend

LEADING OFF
- Gonzaga opens their 2024 West Coast Conference schedule with a three-game series at home against LMU beginning on Friday.
- Gonzaga is coming off a tough week in the midwest, dropping a midweek game at SIUE before being swept by Wichita State.
- Last time at home, Gonzaga won a non-conference series against Minnesota, taking victories in the first and third games.
- Jace Phelan is slashing .324/.361/.618 in the month of March, leading the team in hits (11), runs batted in (10), and home runs (2).
- Tommy Eisenstat has recorded multi-hit games in four of his last seven games, including a 3-for-4 outing against Minnesota where he drove in four runs and scored twice.
- Michael Cunneely is among the top ten in the West Coast Conference in seven different categories. Notably, he is sixth in opposing batting average (.225), fourth in hits allowed (16), and second in walks (2).
- Cunneely is 15th in the country in walks allowed per nine innings (.95) and 26th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.50).

BULLDOGS/LIONS SERIES HISTORY
- Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount will meet for the 103rd, 104th, and 105th times when the Lions travel to Spokane this weekend.
- Gonzaga holds a 54-48 series edge over LMU, including a 31-13 record at home. Under Machtolf, GU leads 37-30 and 20-8 at home.
- Last season, LMU won the series with 4-0 and 10-8 wins in the first two games before GU avoided the sweep with a 7-2 win in game three.
- Gonzaga and LMU first met on March 11, 1979 where LMU won 2-1 in LA.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
- Loyola Marymount is coming off a midweek game at Fresno State where they secured a 12-8 victory on Tuesday. The Lions scattered 15 hits in the back-and-forth affair, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth hold of the Bulldogs.
- Prior to Tuesday, LMU is coming off a four-game series split at home against Dartmouth. A 7-5 win in game one and 28-4 domination in game two highlighted the Lions wins before Dartmouth salvaged the split in the final two games, 10-8 and 10-2.
- Brendan Bobo and Sam Biller are leading the LMU offense so far this season, combining for 50 hits and 50 RBIs, scoring 46 times and tallying 15 of the team's 30 home runs.
- LMU has looked to Owen Hackman as their game one starter in four of their five series so far this season, boasting a 4-1 record with an ERA of 3.37. He leads the WCC in wins (4), is second in opposing batting average (.187), and is tied for third in strikeouts (32).
- LMU earned back-to-back WCC Freshman of the Week honors March 11th and 18th, with JD Dunn and Max Senesac taking the nods.

ON DECK
- Gonzaga will travel to Saint Mary's next weekend for three before stopping in Corvallis to play Oregon State Apr. 1-2.
- After their stop in Corvallis, Gonzaga will return home for a three-game series against Santa Clara Apr. 5-7.

PHELAN SURGING IN MARCH
 - After ending February with an average of .095, Jace Phelan is slashing .324/.361/.618 through nine games in March while leading the team in hits (11), RBIs (10), doubles (4), and home runs (2). He currently owns an eight-game hitting streak, which is tied for the season longest (Peyton Miller, 8).

CUNNEELY LOCKED IN AS FRIDAY STARTER
- After two appearances out of the bullpen to start the season, Michael Cunneely has transitioned into a weekend opening starter for the Bulldogs. Over his three starts since Feb. 29 and despite a 1-2 record, Cunneely holds a 5.62 ERA with 15 strikeouts to just one walk.

HAMBERG SETTLING IN AS GAME THREE STARTER
- Over the past two series against Minnesota and Wichita State, Gonzaga has penciled in Jordan Hamberg to start the finale. In those two spot starts, Hamberg is combined for 7 1/3 scoreless innings while scattering six hits, picking up six strikeouts while walking zero.

TEMESVARY GETTING ON BASE
- Vincent Temesvary is currently strutting a 13-game on base streak dating back to game two of the Vanderbilt series. Over that time he is leading the team in on-base percentage (.433), walks (11), and hit-by-pitches (5). His on-base streak is the longest Gonzaga streak this season, edging Peyton Miller (10) from earlier this year.

EISENSTAT CRUSHING LEFTIES
­- Tommy Eisenstat is currently batting .476 off of left-handed pitching this season, with 10 of his 14 hits coming off of southpaws. Gage Mestas holds the next-highest average, batting .389 and going 7-for-18 off of lefties this season.

ZAGS EARN SERIES WIN OVER MINNESOTA
- Gonzaga picked up their first series win of the 2024 season against Minnesota.
- The Zags and Gophers split the first two games before GU prevailed in the rubber match.
- Tommy Eisenstat led Gonzaga over the weekend, hitting .625 with five hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored in the two wins of the series.
- Michael Cunneely posted a quality start in Thursday's opener after posting seven-plus strong innings, surredering just three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
- Liam Paddack earned the win in Saturday's rubber match after working 4 2/3 innings in relief, giving up just one run on four hits, striking out six and walking none.

HOME SWEET HOME
- Gonzaga will open its 2024 home schedule with a .645 win percentage over 17 seasons at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.
- Since its opening in 2007, the Zags are 202-111 with a WCC record of 134-63 (.680).
- Gonzaga has finished with a home win percentage of .500 or better in 16 out of 17 seasons since Patterson opened in 2007 and 13 straight seasons since 2010.
- In home opening games at Patterson, Gonzaga is 12-5 despite losing four straight home openers since 2020.

ZAGS UPSET NO. 6 VANDERBILT IN SERIES FINALE
- Jordan Hamberg lifted a seventh-inning grand slam to propel Gonzaga to a 9-8 victory in game three on Feb. 25. The Bulldogs put up eight runs in the inning after taking advantage of two Commodore errors.
- Daniel Sotelo shut the door on the Zags' comeback win with three innings, giving up just one run on three hits, striking out two and walking none.
- Gonzaga's bullpen combined for eight innings, surrenduring just three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks in the series finale.
- Gonzaga's win marks their highest-ranked win since 2022 when they defeated No. 2 Oregon State in Corvallis.

NEW FACES ON THE ROSTER
- Gonzaga's 2024 roster includes 14 incoming transfers and 16 freshman.
- Among the transfers are former Coppin State teammates Jordan Hamberg and Josh Hankins. Hamberg, a two-way senior, earned All-HBCU Freshman of the Year in 2021 and twice was the John Olerud Award Two-Way National Player of the Year Finalist in 2022 and 2023. Hamberg owns a career .337/.456/.561 slash with 34 multi-hit games while recording seven 10+ strikeout outings on the mound.
- Hudson Shupe, an in-state native and transfer from Seattle University, batted .333 with 72 hits in his freshman season with the Redhawks. Hailing from Hanford High School in West Richland, Shupe earned a pair of Mid Columbia Conference honors his junior and senior seasons.
- Other notable NCAA transfers on Gonzaga's 2024 roster include Peyton Miller - a sophomore infielder from Pacific, Vincent Temesvary - a junior outfielder from CSU Dominguez Hills, and Jace Phelan - a redshirt junior from Washington State and Spokane-area native.
