Baseball Completes Sweep of LMU with 10-5 Win on Sunday

Gonzaga opens West Coast Conference play with a series sweep for the fourth straight season

SPOKANE, Wash. – For the fourth consecutive season, Gonzaga baseball opened West Coast Conference play with a series sweep after defeating Loyola Marymount 10-5 on Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. Vincent Temesvary hit two home runs in the series finale to fuel the GU offense, part of a 3-for-5 and six RBI day.

Gonzaga (6-14, 3-0 WCC) improved to 5-1 at home this season after Sunday's win. The Zags hit three homers on the day, bringing the series total to eight. Hudson Shupe (3-for-4, 3R, BB on Sunday) continued his hot hitting in his return to the lineup this weekend, combining to go 8-for-11 with four RBIs, five runs scored and three walks.

After the Zags scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead, Loyola Marymount (11-13, 0-3 WCC) responded with three runs in the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Daalen Adderley and Devan Ornelas. Gonzaga got one back in the bottom half of the frame after Shupe doubled and Tommy Eisenstat singled to bring him around, now 5-3 GU.

After a two-run homer in the first, Temesvary stepped to the plate with two runners on in the sixth and launched his second long ball of the game down the right field line to open an 8-3 lead for Gonzaga. Two batters later and after an Eisenstat double, Max Coupe joined the home run party with a towering shot to left to make it a 10-3 game.

Jordan Hamberg (W, 1-0) made his third-straight series finale start for the Bulldogs, working six-plus innings, allowing four runs and scattering ten hits. Prior to Sunday, Hamberg had not completed more than 3 2/3 innings this season.

Gonzaga called on Miles Gosztola (S, 1) in the seventh after a leadoff triple chased Hamberg. Over the final three frames, Gosztola allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four and walking zero. Despite a five-run win for the Zags, Gosztola earned the save with his three innings of work to close the game.
