Baseball Travels to Saint Mary's, No. 2 Oregon State This Weekend

The Zags opened WCC play with a three-game sweep for the fourth straight season last weekend

First pitch times are 3pm, 3pm, and 1pm.</div> <div>- Gonzaga will stop in Corvallis for a two-game midweek series at Oregon State on Monday and Tuesday. Both games will start at 6pm at Goss Stadium.</div> <div>- Gonzaga is comng off of a three-game, WCC opening series sweep of LMU.</div> <div>- Gonzaga swept LMU with scores of 8-6, 7-6, and 10-5.</div> <div>- In game two, Gonzaga trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth before Hudson Shupe delivered a walk-off two run home run to clinch the series.</div> <div>- In the LMU series, Gonzaga blasted a combined eight home runs.</div> <div>- Hudson Shupe returned to Gonzaga's lineup last weekend for the first time since February 16th, batting .727 with five RBIs and four runs scored.</div> <div>- Max Coupe went 4-for-11 in the LMU series, slugging 1.182 while hitting a home run and driving in a pair of runs in each of the three games.</div> <div>- Vincent Temesvary went 5-for-11 against LMU, including a 3-for-5 day on Sunday with two home runs and six runs batted in.</div> <div>- In WCC play, Hudson Shupe currently leads the league in batting average (.727), on base percentage (.786), and on base plus slugging percentage (1.877).<br /> <br /> BULLDOGS/GAELS SERIES HISTORY <div>- Gonzaga and Saint Mary's will meet for the 105th, 106th, and 107th times this weekend at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif.</div> <div>- In the all-time series, Gonzaga holds a 60-44 lead over Saint Mary's dating back to the 1970s. Under Mark Machtolf, Gonzaga holds a 39-29 edge.</div> <div>- Last season, Saint Mary's won the series over Gonzaga 2-1 in Spokane, winning games one and two before GU won the series finale.</div> <div>- Saint Mary's defeated Gonzaga in their first ever meeting, 12-2 (1974).<br /> <br /> BULLDOGS/BEAVERS SERIES HISTORY</div> <div>- Gonzaga and Oregon State will meet for the 111th and 112th times.</div> <div>- Dating back to 1919, Oregon State holds a 73-37 advantage in the series.</div> <div>- Under Machtolf, Oregon state has a 17-10 edge in the series.</div> <div>- Last season, Gonzaga and Oregon State faced off just once, with Oregon State taking the single midweek, 15-1 in Corvallis.<br /> <br /> SCOUTING THE GAELS</div> </div> <div>- Saint Mary's is coming off a midweek 15-5 win at home against Air Force Tuesday.</div> <div>- In their West Coast Conference opening series at San Diego, Saint Mary's won two out of three against the Toreros, with 5-4 and 3-2 wins in a Friday doubleheader before dropping the final game on Saturday 16-2.</div> <div>- As a team, Saint Mary's is slashing .294/.388/.588 and .221/.306/.389 in WCC play.</div> <div>- Christian Almanza leads the Gaels in nearly all offensive categories with a .384 batting average, 11 home runs, 29 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.392, leading the WCC in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS. He won WCC Player of the Week on March 4.</div> <div>- Derik Eaquinto has been penciled in as the Friday starter for Saint Mary's, including last weekend against San Diego and at No. 4 Florida earlier this season. Eaquinto is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts this season, notching 28 strikeouts to just eight walks (1.25 WHIP).<br /> <br /> SCOUTING THE NO. 2 BEAVERS</div> <div>- Oregon State will play a three game series at USC Thursday through Saturday before welcoming Gonzaga on Monday and Tuesday for a midweek two-game series.</div> <div>- Last weekend, Oregon State swept Washington at home to improve to 5-1 in Pac-12 play.</div> <div>- Travis Bazzana (.467) and Micah McDowell (.446) are both top ten in the country in average through 23 games for OSU, who rank tenth nationally in team batting average (.330).</div> <div>- Bazzana is third in the country in home runs (14), slugging percentage (1.054) and on base percentage (.581), seventh in runs scored (39), and ninth in hits (43). </div> <div>- Oregon State holds a team ERA of 3.60, which is the tenth lowest team ERA in the country.</div> <div>- Oregon State is ranked No. 4 in RPI, No. 6 in non-conference RPI, No. 56 in strength of schedule, and No. 57 in non-conference SOS. They are 4-2 against Top 50 RPI teams this year.<br /> <br /> ZAGS SWEEP TO OPEN WCC PLAY</div> <div>- For the fourth straight season, Gonzaga opened West Coast Conference play with a three-game sweep after defeating LMU 8-6, 7-6, and 10-5 last weekend at home.</div> <div>- Loyola Marymount is the fourth different team Gonzaga has swept to open WCC play since 2021, sweeping San Francisco in 2023, Pacific in 2022, and Santa Clara in 2021.</div> <div>- Gonzaga has not lost their first home WCC series since 2015 and are 20-4 in their first home WCC series over those eight seasons (2020 season cut short before WCC play).<br /> <br /> SHUPE'S HOT RETURN</div> <div>- In his return to the Gonzaga lineup since February 16th last weekend against LMU, Hudson Shupe batted .727 and slugged 1.091 in GU's three-game WCC-opening sweep.</div> <div>- In four games, Shupe is batting .688 with two home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs.</div> <div>- In game two against LMU, Shupe hit a walk-off two-run homer to clinch the series for GU.</div> <div>- Dating back to last season with Seattle U, Shupe is in the middle of a 14-game hit streak.<br /> <br /> HAMBERG SETTLING IN AS GAME THREE STARTER</div> <div>- Since filling in as a game three starter against Minnesota, Wichita State, and LMU, lefty Jordan Hamberg is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA over 13 1/3 innings, allowing just four earned runs while striking out nine.<br /> <br /> TEMESVARY GETTING ON BASE</div> <div>- Vincent Temesvary is currently strutting a 16-game on base streak dating back to game two of the Vanderbilt series. Over that time he is leading the team in on-base percentage (.452), walks (12), and hit-by-pitches (6). His on-base streak is the longest Gonzaga streak this season, beating out Peyton Miller (10) from earlier this year.<br /> <br /> EISENSTAT CRUSHING LEFTIES</div> <div>­- Tommy Eisenstat is currently batting .417 off of left-handed pitching this season, with 10 of his 16 hits coming off of southpaws. Gage Mestas holds the next-highest average, batting .389 and going 7-for-18 off of lefties this season.<br /> <br /> HISTORY AGAINST THE TOP FIVE BEAVS</div> <div>- Gonzaga will square off against a Top-Five Oregon State team for the sixth time since 2018. This marks the fourth meeting against the Beavers as a No. 2 ranked team. GU's highest-ranked win against Oregon State came in 2022, when they defeated the second-ranked Beavs, 13-6 in Corvallis.<br /> <br /> GONZAGA'S ROAD WOES</div> <div>- After a 1-13 start on the road this season, Gonzaga looks to snap losing streaks in road games (lost eight), road non-conference games (lost eight),  WCC road games (lost five), and unranked road games (lost 14) this weekend at Saint Mary's and Oregon State.<br /> <br /> ZAGS WINS SERIES OVER MINNESOTA</div> <div>- Gonzaga picked up their first series win of the 2024 season against Minnesota.</div> <div>- The Zags and Gophers split the first two games before GU prevailed in the rubber match.</div> <div>- Tommy Eisenstat led Gonzaga over the weekend, hitting .625 with five hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored in the two wins of the series.</div> <div>- Michael Cunneely posted a quality start in Thursday's opener after posting seven-plus strong innings, surredering just three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.</div> <div>- Liam Paddack earned the win in Saturday's rubber match after working 4 2/3 innings in relief, giving up just one run on four hits, striking out six and walking none.<br /> <br /> ZAGS UPSET NO. 6 VANDERBILT IN SERIES FINALE</div> <div>- Jordan Hamberg lifted a seventh-inning grand slam to propel Gonzaga to a 9-8 victory in game three on Feb. 25. The Bulldogs put up eight runs in the inning after taking advantage of two Commodore errors.</div> <div>- Daniel Sotelo shut the door on the Zags' comeback win with three innings, giving up just one run on three hits, striking out two and walking none.</div> <div>- Gonzaga's bullpen combined for eight innings, surrenduring just three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks in the series finale.</div> <div>- Gonzaga's win marks their highest-ranked win since 2022 when they defeated No. 2 Oregon State in Corvallis.<br /> <br /> MACHTOLF EYES 600TH WIN IN 2024</div> <div>­- Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Machtolf enters his 21st season at the helm for the Bulldogs, currently holding 578 career wins since taking the reigns in the fall of 2003.</div> <div>- Machtolf is just 23 wins from eclipsing 600. He currently holds the second-most wins in program history behind Steve Hertz, who has 637 (24 seasons, 1978, 1981-2003). Machtolf's .551 win percentage is third-highest in Gonzaga history behind Larry Koentopp's (1970-77) .677 and Jim Lawler's (1979-80) .667.</div> <div>- Throughout his 20-year tenure, Machtolf has won 30 games in 13 of those seasons. One of those other seven was the 2020 season that was cut short by Covid.<br /> <br /> NEW FACES ON THE ROSTER</div> <div>- Gonzaga's 2024 roster includes 14 incoming transfers and 16 freshman.</div> <div>- Among the transfers are former Coppin State teammates Jordan Hamberg and Josh Hankins. Hamberg, a two-way senior, earned All-HBCU Freshman of the Year in 2021 and twice was the John Olerud Award Two-Way National Player of the Year Finalist in 2022 and 2023. Hamberg owns a career .337/.456/.561 slash with 34 multi-hit games while recording seven 10+ strikeout outings on the mound.</div> <div>- Hudson Shupe, an in-state native and transfer from Seattle University, batted .333 with 72 hits in his freshman season with the Redhawks. Hailing from Hanford High School in West Richland, Shupe earned a pair of Mid Columbia Conference honors his junior and senior seasons.</div> <div>- Other notable NCAA transfers on Gonzaga's 2024 roster include Peyton Miller - a sophomore infielder from Pacific, Vincent Temesvary - a junior outfielder from CSU Dominguez Hills, and Jace Phelan - a redshirt junior from Washington State and Spokane-area native.</div>
