MORAGA, Calif. – After a rainout postponed Friday's game, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's faced off in a doubleheader on Saturday at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels won both by scores of 6-3 and 14-0 to improve to 4-2 in West Coast Conference play.
Gonzaga (7-16, 4-2 WCC) opened the scoring in game one with a pair of sacrifice flies in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Despite three hits and a Saint Mary's (15-10, 4-2 WCC) error, the Zags were only able to plate two in that frame while leaving a pair of runners on base.
Liam Paddack (L, 1-3) worked through four scoreless innings before surrendering his first run in the fifth. A leadoff walk for the Gaels moved around to eventually score on an RBI groundout to cut the Gonzaga lead in half. A leadoff single in the sixth also made its way around to score to knot things up at two.
The Zags answered to retake the lead in the top of the seventh with their third sacrifice fly of the day, but Saint Mary's answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame after chasing Paddack. Another pair of runs in the eighth provided enough insurance for the Gaels and Preston Howey, whose two scoreless innings earned him the save in game one of the doubleheader.
In the series finale Saturday afternoon, a Saint Mary's offensive barrage put the game out of reach almost immediately, posting 11 runs in the first three innings. Connor Harrison and Christian Almanza led the charge for the Gaels, each hitting home runs during that stretch. Almanza's grand slam in the third, his 12th homer of the season, capped off the onslaught.
Saint Mary's starter Connor Linchey was nearly untouchable in game two, working through 6 1/3 perfect innings before
Max Coupe broke up his bid with a one-out single in the seventh. Linchey completed eight innings, facing one batter over the minimum on just 74 pitches while striking out four Bulldog hitters.
The Zags mustered just two hits in game two, as Justin Santiago entered to complete the 14-0 shutout and earn the series win.
