Gonzaga Women's Rowing Sweeps Saint Mary's

The Bulldogs compete next weekend at Lake Natoma Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's rowing team competed two days on Friday and Saturday against Saint Mary's and swept the competition.

"It was a great weekend of back to back racing," head coach Andrew Derrick said. "I thought the whole team raced well and really took advantage of phenomenal conditions on Friday. Saturday was not quite as favorable to a great performance, but they handled them well.  All in all it was a great showing for our whole roster and a good step as we get ready to hit the road next weekend."

On Friday afternoon, three races occurred on Silver Lake and Gonzaga took first in all three. In the Varsity 8 boat, GU placed first with a time of 6:31.13, way ahead of Saint Mary's time of 6:58.90.

"This was a very well executed race," Derrick added. "Coxswain and crew knew the plan and carried it out with a vision on carrying these skills into the remainder of the season."

"Race went well, was executed well but could be more aggressive on moves," coxswain Lula Macey said. "Overall we were very relaxed and sustainable and stayed very consistent through the whole race."

In the second race of the afternoon, Gonzaga's 2V8 crew took first with a time of 6:46.48 as GU's 4V8 placed second with a time of 6:58.56. Saint Mary's 2V8 placed third in the race as Gonzaga's 6V8 took fourth.

In the third race of the day, the Bulldogs had all four boats place ahead of Saint Mary's varsity four crew. GU's 1V4 boat took first with a time of 7:36.07 as the 2V4 boat was second place with 7:46.6. The other boats competing in the race was 5V4  and 6V4 for Gonzaga as they placed ahead of Saint Mary's finish of 8:38.51.

Saturday morning, Gonzaga competed in three more races by sweeping the Gaels in all three. The first race of the day was the fours, where the 1V4 finished with a time of 8:17.76. The 2V4 boat placed second with 8:23.01 as 3V4 took third with 8:25.55. The 4V4 crew finished fourth in 8:58.37 as Saint Mary's 1V4 finished last with a time of 9:20.69. The Gonzaga V four had an incredible first thousand, challenging for second place in the event until the Gonzaga II Four overtook them in the third 500m.

The eights competed in the second race and GU dominated with posting a time of 7:06.89, compared to SMC's 7:29.11.

The second varsity boats rounded out the competition with Gonzaga having three boats compete. GU's 2V8 boat took first with a time of 7:29.73 as Saint Mary's placed second with 7:49.52. The 5V8 crew finished third for Gonzaga as the 6V8 boat took fourth in the race.
