SPOKANE, Wash. – Kicking off their final regular season series of 2024, Gonzaga baseball fell to Pepperdine at home on Thursday by a score of 15-5. The Waves used a pair of five-run innings in the sixth and seventh to power past the Bulldogs at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.
Gonzaga (19-28, 14-8 WCC) and Pepperdine (13-37, 7-15 WCC) traded blows early on Thursday, with the Waves opening the contest with two runs in the top of the first. GU responded with three in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI hits from
Jordan Hamberg and
Donovan Ratfield. Pepperdine would score two more in the top of the second to retake a 4-3 lead, a lead that would hold until the sixth inning.
Pepperdine was able to chase Gonzaga starter
Justin Feld (L, 3-2) in the top of the sixth while tagging the Bulldogs for five runs in the inning to open a 9-3 lead. The Zags answered with two of their own before Pepperdine scored five more in the seventh to make it 14-5.
The Waves added one more in the eighth while holding Gonzaga scoreless over the final three innings to secure the 15-5 win and keep their WCC tournament hopes alive. As for Gonzaga, the combination of their loss and a Portland win on Thursday locked the Bulldogs into the four seed in Las Vegas next week, where they will face Santa Clara on Wednesday.
