SPOKANE, Wash. – Former Gonzaga Baseball infielder Brett Harris received the call to the major leagues on Friday, becoming the 30th former Zag to make the MLB and third active Bulldog in the bigs when the Oakland Athletics called him up.
Harris, the No. 9 ranked prospect in the Athletics organization, began his season with the Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas Aviators after earning an invite to Spring Training last November. In 27 games for the Aviators this spring, Harris is batting .289 while leading the team in hits (26), runs batted in (20), walks (18), and runs scored (16).
In the month of April, Harris batted .304 with three homers and driving in 20 runs. On Apr. 7, he went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored, including a two-run triple in a 10-6 win. On Sunday, Harris posted another four-RBI day when he blasted a ninth-inning grand slam to provide some insurance for the Aviators in a 7-0 shutout win over the Pacific-Coast-League-West-leading Sacramento River Cats.
In 2023, Harris spent most of the season in Double-A Midland before being promoted to Las Vegas in July. He combined for a .279 average with nine home runs and 62 runs batted in last season. Harris has steadily made his way up through the Athletics organization, starting in the rookie league before moving up to High-A affiliate Lansing in 2021 and Double-A affiliate Midland in 2022.
The Illinois-native was drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 draft by the Athletics after a monster junior season for the Zags where he led the team in four offensive categories, including average (.350), OPS (1.027), runs (52), and hits (70). That season, Harris earned Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American, West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-WCC after a pair of All-WCC Honorable Mention nods the previous two seasons.
Now the third active GU alum in the majors, Harris joins pitchers Marco Gonzales (11th season, Pittsburgh Pirates) and Eli Morgan (fourth season, Cleveland Guardians) in the bigs this season. Alek Jacob, another 2021 Gonzaga draftee, made his major league debut last July for the San Diego Padres and is currently with Triple-A affiliate El Paso. Troy Johnston is also making noise in the minor leagues after a Spring Training invite with the Marlins this season, currently playing for the Triple-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
The Oakland Athletics open a three-game series with Miami on Friday, with first pitch set for 6:40pm PST.
