FORT WORTH, Texas – Gonzaga baseball signees Nathan Flewelling and Hunter Dryden, two Zags originally inked for 2024-25, were selected in the 2024 MLB Draft earlier this week. Flewelling, a senior catcher at St. Joseph High School in Alberta, Canada, was selected in the third round on Monday by the Tampa Bay Rays as the 94th overall pick. Dryden, a senior pitcher at Whitworth set to join the Zags as a graduate transfer, was selected in the 17th round and 508th overall.
One of Canada's top prospects entering this year's draft, Flewelling was named Prep Baseball Canada Player of the Year on July 8 after a strong senior season for the Saints. He is the first player outside of Ontario to win the award. This summer with the Western Canadian Baseball League's Sylvan Lake, Flewelling batted .329 with 18 runs batted in and five home runs.
Dryden concluded his Whitworth career this spring with his fourth All-Northwest Conference honor, earning a First Team nod after a Second Team selection in 2023. In his four years with the Pirates, Dryden compiled a 3.22 ERA, including a career-low and team-leading 2.10 ERA in 12 appearances this year with a 6-3 record. Dryden also led the team in opposing batting average (.218), innings pitched (68.2), and strikeouts (71) this season. After an ABCA Third Team All-Region selection in 2023, Dryden notched a Second Team selection this season. This summer with Mahoning Valley in the MLB Draft League, Dryden sported a 2-2 record and a 3.00 ERA in six starts.
