SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball player
Vincent Temesvary is set to compete for Hungary's National Team next week in Belgrade, Serbia. Pool B of the European Championship Qualifiers will take place July 22-27, with 14 teams hoping to earn a qualification for the 2025 European Championship next summer.
"It means a lot to be able to represent my country and play baseball on an international stage," Temesvary said. "This is such a unique opportunity to play baseball in a country where baseball isn't necessarily their biggest sport. It's going to be a great experience."
Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Turkey are the five teams competing in pool play within the Serbia Group of the Pool B Qualifiers. Nine other teams are split across the Poland and Ireland Groups and will face off in pool play of their own. The two highest-finishing teams in Pool B will qualify for the 2025 European Championship, while the two lowest-finishing teams will be relegated to Pool C.
"This is a great opportunity for Vince," Gonzaga Head Coach
Mark Machtolf said. "We are excited for him to get this opportunity to play on that stage, and we are so proud of him."
The round-robin action will kick off July 22 on Ada Ciganlija, a river island off the Sava River in Belgrade notable for its beaches and sports facilities that garner hundreds of thousands of visitors each week during the summer. Hungary will face Serbia on July 22 to open their slate before squaring off with Slovakia on July 24, Slovenia on July 25, and Turkey on July 26. The top two teams from the Serbia Group will compete in one final game on July 27 that will decide who moves closer to promotion into Pool A and an automatic qualification to the 2025 European Championship.
