SPOKANE, Wash. -- Despite recording 17 shots on the night, the Gonzaga men's soccer team fell to Western Illinois, 3-2, at Luger Field on Sunday night.
The Zags (6-2-0) scored quickly in the game with a goal from
Ben Augee in the fourth minute. Augee dribbled the ball into the box and hit the very top of the crossbar before it bounced into the net. The goal was his third of the season and made it 1-0 early on for Gonzaga.
Western Illinois (3-3-1) responded in the 14th minute when Liam Gainey found the back of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. The Leathernecks scored again in the 22nd minute with an unassisted goal from Ty Duax to give WIU the lead, 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of Western Illinois going into halftime. The shots were even at 6-6 at the half as the Leathernecks made three saves and
Chema Preciado had one for the Zags.
Gonzaga tied the game in the 66th minute when
Drew Pedersen scored his fourth goal of the season, with the assist coming from
Jelle Van Deijck. Pedersen dribbled around multiple defenders from inside the box after Deijck dished him a perfect pass to make it 2-2.
WIU scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute with a goal Tyler Philpott as Xavier Gagnon gave the assist to give Western Illinois the 3-2 lead.
Overall, GU outshot the Leathernecks, 17-12, as the Bulldogs had eight shots on goal.
Chris Swider led the way with five shots and Pedersen recorded three shots on goal. Preciado made four saves on the night for the Bulldogs.
The Zags also had possession for 59% of the match and Gonzaga forced six corner kicks compared the WIU's three.
