Regarded as one of the perennial powerhouses in collegiate basketball, Gonzaga has appeared in 25 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including nine straight Sweet 16 appearances. Last season, the Bulldogs won 27 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to national runner-up Purdue. Gonzaga has also won a share of the West Coast Conference crown in 11 of the past 12 seasons. This year, Gonzaga returns four starters, including All-American Graham Ike and fellow First Team All-Conference selections Ryan Nembhard and transfer Michael Ajayi. Head Coach Mark Few enters his 26th season at the helm of the Bulldogs with the top winning percentage among active coaches in the country at 83.4 percent. This summer, he served as an assistant coach on Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr's USA Basketball staff at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the United States won its fifth consecutive gold medal.

Fresh off their second postseason berth in the last three seasons, San Francisco will return seven student-athletes from last year's team, including All-WCC selections Marcus Williams, Malik Thomas, Ndewedo Newbury, and Ryan Beasley. Transfers Carlton Linguard Jr. (UTSA) and Jason Rivera-Torres (Vanderbilt) headline the team's additions for the upcoming season, along with a mix of incoming freshmen. Head Coach Chris Gerlufsen enters his third year at the helm of the Dons.

Last season, Gonzaga pulled away from the Dons in the Chase Center, 86-68. The Zags outscored USF 51-34 in the second half, after leading by one at halftime. Ike scored 26 points, while Nolan Hickman added 22 points, for the then-ranked No. 23 Bulldogs. GU has won the last 30 meetings against San Francisco dating back to 2012.
