SPOKANE, Wash. – San Diego volleyball head coach Jennifer Petrie earned her 500th career win with a 3-0 sweep over Gonzaga on Thursday inside the Charlotte Y. Martin Centre. The Torero squad, who earned votes in the latest AVCA National Poll, earned the 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 win to open West Coast Conference play 1-0.
San Diego (6-5, 1-0 WCC) dominated in the opening set, notching a perfect 15 kills with no errors on a .536 clip to earn the 25-13 win. Reigning WCC Freshman of the Week Kennedy Osunsami recorded five kills to lead USD, while Nemo Beach added four.
Autumn Larson was hot early for Gonzaga (1-10, 0-1 WCC), picking up five early kills to match Osunsami.
Set two would also go the way of San Diego, despite just a .250 hitting percentage and five attack errors. The Toreros added five total blocks as a team to take a 2-0 lead and force Gonzaga into a hole heading into the first break. Osunsami added four more kills in the second set.
The Zags put up a heavy fight in the third, but could not overcome 21 kills by the USD offense. Despite a back-and-forth battle early on, San Diego would break an 11-11 tie amidst a 5-0 run to open just enough of a lead to hang on for the sweep. Osunsami capped off her 15-kill performance with six in the final set. Haylee Stoner and Beach each added ten kills for the Toreros in the win.
Larson was the lone Zag in double figures on Thursday, posting 11 on just 27 swings.
Maddie Cugino added 11 digs and
Brianna Martin served up three aces in the loss.
