SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga men's soccer team won its fifth-straight game with a 2-0 win over Utah Tech on Thursday night. The Zags are now 5-0-0 for the first time since 1980 and for the first time since joining the West Coast Conference.
Even though the score was scoreless after the first half, the Bulldogs outshot the Trailblazers, 10-2. Three Zags recorded a team-high two shots in the first 45 minutes, including
Stefano Campisi,
Damoni Mckenna-Greenawalt and
Jake Goehring. The Bulldogs also had possession for 56% in the first half and had four of those shots on goal.Â
GU got on the board in the 62nd minute when Campisi dribbled the ball down the field to find the back of the net and made it 1-0 for Gonzaga. The goal marked Campisi's third goal of the year.Â
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute when
Ben Augee scored.
Drew Pedersen dished the ball to Augee from about the middle of the field and Augee made it inside the box to shoot it past Utah Tech's defenders and goalkeeper.
Overall, Gonzaga outshout the Trailblazers, 15-9, with Campisi taking a team-high three shots.
Alex Bazia also recorded two shots on goal on the night.
Goalkeeper
Chema Preciado made four saves in the game to record his second shutout of the year. The Bulldogs also had possession for 58% of the match as both teams drew seven corner kicks.
Records: Gonzaga moves to 5-0-0 on the year for the first time since 1980. It also marks the first time GU has started at 5-0-0 since joining the WCC. Gonzaga is the first team to reach 5-0 in the country as well.Â
