Pepperdine Outlasts Gonzaga, 1-0

Penalty kick in 32nd minute the difference in defensive battle

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine remained unbeaten in conference play with a 1-0 win at home over Gonzaga women's soccer Saturday.

The Waves (8-4-1, 5-0-0 West Coast Conference) have opened league play with five straight wins and have won eight of their last 10 matches. The Bulldogs (5-8-0, 3-2-0 WCC) had their three-game win streak snapped. GU entered the match without allowing a goal in its previous 270 minutes of play.

Pepperdine's Ariana Salvador converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute for the match's lone goal. It was her first goal of the season, coming after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined there was a foul on the Zags inside the box.

In a tightly contested match, the Waves held off Gonzaga for the remaining 58 minutes despite the Bulldogs holding an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Pepperdine had a 15-12 edge in total shots and possessed the ball for 54 percent of the match. The Waves also recorded a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Kylie Jones and Amelia Severn each took three shots to lead Gonzaga, with two on target for both players. The Zags forced Pepperdine goalkeeper Jillian Medvecky into eight saves, while Michaela McCollum made two saves in the GU net.

Gonzaga will make the short trip to Washington State (3-5-4, 1-2-1) next Saturday at 7 p.m. The match will stream on ESPN+, with live stats available on GoZags.com.
