SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's rowing continued its fall campaign with a commanding performance at the annual Head of the Spokane on Saturday, securing victories across all varsity events and several novice races on the Spokane River.
"Really great day on the Spokane River," head coach Dan Gehn said. "I thought the guys nailed it. It is nice to talk about performing a certain way and then going out and doing it."
The Bulldogs' first varsity eight led the way with a winning time of 15:03, nearly 20 seconds ahead of Washington State's top crew (15:25). Gonzaga's second varsity eight followed in third overall at 15:43, while the novice eight crossed in 16:50 to round out a strong opening session.
In the fours, Gonzaga swept the top two spots, as the 1V4+ posted a time of 16:49, followed closely by the 2V4+ at 17:11, both ahead of WSU's leading entry (17:23).
The Zags capped the day with another sweep in the late session, where the novice eight won in 16:33, narrowly topping the GU 3V8+ (16:36).
Gonzaga's depth and consistency were on display throughout the regatta, as each boat finished ahead of its Cougar counterparts in at least one event.
The Bulldogs will return to competition on Oct. 25 at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif.
