Gonzaga Lifts Interim Title, Names McGaughey Head Coach

McGaughey served as interim head coach this past season

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga Director of Athletics Chris Standiford announced today that Chris McGaughey has been named head coach of the Gonzaga men's soccer program. McGaughey served as the Bulldogs' interim head coach during the 2025 season.

"Chris has shown a commitment to developing our student-athletes both on and off the field," Standiford said.

McGaughey joined the Gonzaga coaching staff prior to the 2023 season after serving as an assistant coach at CSU Bakersfield. He brought with him a wealth of experience from both his collegiate and professional playing career.

"I am very honored and humbled to be taking over as head coach of the Gonzaga men's soccer program," McGaughey said. "My family and I would like to thank our administration for believing in me and trusting the vision I have for GU men's soccer.

"Having been lucky enough to be here for the last three years, I understand the goals and expectations of the department, and I firmly believe Gonzaga and the Spokane community is a perfect fit. This is a great program with a rich history that gives our student-athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest level. I am very proud of the work we have done over the last year, and I am excited for the future of this program."

"Chris has brought stability, energy, and a clear vision for the future of Gonzaga men's soccer," Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer Shannon Strahl said. "While we recognize there is still progress to be made to consistently compete with top tier teams, Chris has laid a strong foundation and we believe the program is moving in the right direction. Gonzaga remains proud of our men's soccer student-athletes and their incredible contributions in the classroom, community and on the field."

Since joining the Bulldogs in 2023, McGaughey has guided Gonzaga men's soccer to significant individual and team milestones. Under his leadership, Ben Augee was selected 80th overall by FC Cincinnati, becoming the fifth Zag in program history to be drafted into MLS. Robbie Mora earned All-WCC Second Team honors, while Stefano Campisi, Farhan Moustafa, and Augee each received All-WCC Honorable Mention recognition. The Zags also excelled in the classroom, collecting 10 All-WCC Academic honors and four CSC All-District Academic selections.

During the 2025 season, McGaughey's squad continued to build momentum, recording the program's first conference win since 2023, its first hat trick performance since 2016, and earning a WCC Player of the Week honor—reflecting the team's progress and growing competitiveness under his direction.
