Men's Soccer Falls Short Against San Diego 1-0

The Zags return home next weekend

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Gonzaga University fell to the University of San Diego 1-0 on Sunday at Torero Stadium, with the home team securing the victory with a second-half goal.

The match between the Bulldogs and San Diego began with both teams displaying a strong defensive stance. Gonzaga's Chema Preciado made a crucial save in the 11th minute, stopping a shot from San Diego's Cesar Bahena to keep the game level. Despite multiple offensive pushes from San Diego, GU's defense held firm throughout the period.

The first half concluded with a scoreless draw, as neither side could capitalize on their opportunities. The Zags' efforts to break through San Diego's defense were met with resistance, and the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The second half began with San Diego applying early pressure, but Gonzaga remained resilient on defense. Ian Silva and Damoni McKenna-Greenawalt managed shots that pressured San Diego's backline, though neither found the net. As the period progressed, Iain Wagner scored for San Diego in the 57th minute, assisted by Devin Zachry and Taj Eagleston, placing the Bulldogs in a trailing position.

GU continued to press forward, with Farhan Moustafa and Drew Pedersen both testing San Diego's goalkeeper, Lucca Adams, who made crucial saves to preserve the lead. Preciado made a significant save on Wagner's attempt, keeping the deficit to a single goal. Despite the Zags' efforts in the closing stages, including a corner attempt in the 84th minute, the period ended with Gonzaga trailing San Diego 1-0.

Preciado recorded three saves while facing 16 shots, conceding only one goal during 90 minutes in the match. Moustafa contributed with one shot on goal, demonstrating his presence in the defensive line. Pedersen registered one shot that was on target, adding to the attacking efforts.

Gonzaga stands at 4-8-3 overall and 1-5-2 in conference play. San Diego improves to 12-2-3 overall with a 6-1-1 mark in conference action.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will return to Luger Field in Spokane, Washington, for their next matchup against LMU. The game is set for Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.
