Women’s Soccer Wins Thriller in Regular Season Finale, 4-2

Zags and Beavers combine for four second half goals

SPOKANE, WASH. — Gonzaga women's soccer pulled away from Oregon State at Luger Field in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday. The Zags scored twice in each half to secure the victory.

Gonzaga (8-9-2, 6-3-2 West Coast Conference) took the initiative early in the first half, with Katelyn Rigg capitalizing on an assist from Samantha Snorsky to score in the 11th minute, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The home team continued to apply pressure, and in the 20th minute, Amelia Severn doubled the advantage with a goal assisted by Olivia Lester.

The Zags maintained control throughout the half, generating multiple offensive opportunities, including several saved shots by Oregon State's (2-12-5, 1-9-1 WCC) goalkeeper, Mya Sanchez. Michaela McCollum contributed defensively with a crucial save in the 38th minute, ensuring a 2-0 lead for GU at the close of the first half.

The second half began with a surge from the Zags, highlighted by early offensive pressure including a corner kick and multiple attempts from Kylie Jones and Rigg, though neither found the net. The momentum shifted as Oregon State scored in the 58th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and then equalized shortly after with a goal from Alyssa White, leveling the match at 2-2.

Gonzaga regained the lead when Severn converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute following a foul by Oregon State, making it 3-2. The team maintained pressure, and in the 81st minute, Jones capitalized on another penalty opportunity to extend the advantage to 4-2.

Despite continued attempts from both sides, including a series of shots saved by McCollum, the Bulldogs maintained their lead. The half closed with GU ahead 4-2, securing the victory at the end of regulation.

Jones scored once and took five shots, with three on target, contributing significantly to the offense. Severn added two goals, including the game-winner, and made four shots, two of which were on target. McCollum recorded three saves, facing 13 shots over 90 minutes to secure the win.
