SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's tennis came up short on Sunday, falling 4-3 to Idaho at the Stevens Center.
The Zags got on the board first, notching the doubles point with dominant 6-2 showings from
Jay Fairclough/
Nicholas Reeves and
Giovanni Branchetti/
Kai-Luca Ampaw. When the dual moved to singles,
Tom Dunlop/
Gus Krauel were leading 4-2.
All six singles matches were tightly contested, with half going to three sets and four total tiebreakers. Dunlop gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, winning 6-3, 6-4 in — amazingly — the most lopsided singles bout of the afternoon.
The Vandals bounced back, surviving Reeves (6-4, 7-6 (2)),
Diego Herrera (7-5, 7-5), and Branchetti (6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (6)) to take a 3-2 advantage in the overall match. On court 4, Fairclough rallied from a dropped first frame to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
With the dual knotted 3-3, all eyes turned to court two, where Ampaw was in the third set of a battle. The freshman had dropped the first frame 7-5 and withstood a tiebreaker 8-6 in the second. In the final set, Idaho's Chetanna Amadike prevailed 7-5 to clinch the overall match.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs travel to California over spring break, facing UC San Diego (March 9) and San Diego State (March 12). GU opens WCC play with a home dual against Portland (March 23). For those unable to attend, live video and stats will be available at
