SPOKANE, Wash. – After securing the doubles point in a tiebreaker, Gonzaga men's tennis (9-10 overall, 1-5 WCC) fell 4-1 to No. 7 San Diego on Sunday at the Stevens Center.
In the season's home finale, the Bulldogs put up a fight against the nationally-ranked Toreros. San Diego's Oliver Tarvet/Stian Klaassen — slotted No. 3 on this week's ITA doubles rankings — defeated
Giovanni Branchetti/
Kai-Luca Ampaw 6-2, then
Tom Dunlop/
Gus Krauel withstood their pairing 6-4.
The doubles point would come down to court two, where
Jay Fairclough/
Nicholas Reeves were knotted 4-4 with their duo. That bout went to a tiebreaker, with Gonzaga prevailing 7-5 to claim the dual's opening point. With the victory, Fairclough/Reeves are now 9-0 when paired up this Spring.
San Diego responded in singles, taking down Reeves (6-1, 6-1), Branchetti (6-0, 6-2), Dunlop (6-3, 6-1), and
Oscar Rashed (6-3, 6-2) to clinch the overall match. Branchetti faced Oliver Tarvet, ITA's No. 3 singles player. The dual ended with Ampaw and Fairclough battling through their second sets. Ampaw trailed against No. 83 Savriyan Danilov, while Fairclough had dropped a first-frame tiebreaker.
The Toreros (6-0 WCC) claimed at least a share of the conference regular season title with Sunday's victory. Pepperdine (4-1) would need to beat both San Diego (April 18) and Saint Mary's (April 19) at home to share the WCC regular season honors with the Toreros.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs conclude regular season WCC play with a road dual against No. 75 Santa Clara on Saturday (April 19).
