PORTLAND, Ore. – After plating nine runs in the bottom of the seventh, Portland baseball evened the series with a 12-5 win over Gonzaga on Friday at Joe Etzel Field.
Â
Gonzaga (25-25, 15-8 WCC) took a 4-0 lead over Portland (22-28, 13-10 WCC) after the top of the third, scoring once in the second before a three-run third put the Bulldogs up four.
Â
The Pilots responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third, adding another in the sixth to make it 4-3 Gonzaga. GU got one right back in the seventh with an RBI single from Mikey Bell, but the wheels fell off in the next half-inning.
Â
Portland scored nine runs on six hits, taking advantage of two walks and two hit batters to flip the game and break it open.
Â
Gonzaga tallied 11 hits in game two, led by three from Ty Yukumoto. Bell continued to drive up his batting average with a 2-for-5, two RBI, one run performance. Max Coupe added a 2-for-4 effort in the loss.
Â
Despite the no decision, Miles Gosztola struck out eight across five and a third innings, allowing just three runs on four hits. Only one of Gosztola's four walks came around to score.
Â
UP NEXT
Gonzaga will look to take the series finale on Saturday, as they find themselves in the same position as Friday. A win or a Saint Mary's loss would secure the No. 2 seed for the Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference Tournament next week.
