Loyola Marymount Defeats Gonzaga in Game Two, 7-1

A quick start for the Lions put them ahead early to even the series

Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Loyola Marymount led nearly wire-to-wire on Saturday to win game two of their three game series with Gonzaga at Page Stadium. The Lions scored three in the first inning and hung on for the 7-1 win.

Loyola Marymount (24-23, 11-9 WCC) was off to a hot start on Saturday, picking up four consecutive singles to open the bottom of the first that lead to three runs. Despite allowing four in the first two frames, Gonzaga (21-22, 12-5 WCC) starter Miles Gosztola (L, 5-6) completed five innings, allowing six runs while striking out three.

For the Lions, Avery Laine (W, 4-0) quieted the GU bats for seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out seven. The Bulldogs' lone run came in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Sam Stem.

Kai Francis allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of relief. Neither Gosztola nor Francis allowed a walk, marking the first time Zag pitching combined for zero walks since May 24, 2023.

Despite the loss, Gonzaga entered Saturday as the first of six qualifiers for the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas. San Diego, who is battling GU atop the WCC standings, could become the second team in with a victory over San Francisco.
