SPOKANE, Wash. – Utah picked up a 2-1 road win over Gonzaga women's soccer in a season-opener for both teams at Luger Field Thursday.
Gonzaga struck first but couldn't hold off Utah's (1-0-0) late surge. In her Bulldog debut,
Shila Rasoul gave the Zags the lead in the 53rd minute, heading home a composed finish after a sharp passing sequence from
Katelyn Rigg and
Samantha Snorsky.
The advantage lasted just 15 minutes before Julia Oka equalized for the Utes, finishing a cross from Grace Watkins in the 68th minute. Watkins played provider again with under 10 minutes to play, setting up Kelly Bullock's decisive strike in the 80th.
Utah held a 18–11 edge in shots, forcing GU (0-1-0) goalkeeper
Michaela McCollum into five saves, while Utah's keeper stopped two.
Amelia Severn led the Zags with four shots, including two on target. Ali Swenson had four shots for the Utes.
In it's next match, Gonzaga welcomes Simon Fraser (B.C.) on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus, with live stats on GoZags.com.
