SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's soccer held off Simon Fraser, 2-1, on a hot day at Luger Field Sunday. The victory was the first of the season for the Bulldogs (1-1-0).
Simon Fraser (0-0-0) had only one shot in the first half, but made it count. The Red Leafs struck first when Kaiden Sherwood found the net at 25:55 on assists from Sofia Faremo and Katelyn Magdalinski.
Gonzaga wasted little time answering, as
Amelia Severn equalized just 46 seconds later, assisted by
Brooke Metcalfe, on a shot from distance well outside the box.
The Bulldogs took the lead early in the second half when
Katelyn Rigg converted a penalty kick in the 49
th minute, and GU held on from there.
Gonzaga dominated nearly every facet of the game. The Bulldogs outshot Simon Fraser 22-4—11 in each half—and enjoyed a commanding 13-3 edge in corner kicks. Their offense challenged Simon Fraser's defense from every angle, forcing seven saves. The Zags'
Michaela McCollum finished with two saves.
Individually, Gonzaga's
Shila Rasoul and Rigg had great offensive outputs—Rasoul with four shots (two on target) and Rigg with three shots (one goal).
The Bulldogs possessed the ball for 57 percent of the match, with 68 percent of their possession on the attacking end of the field.
Gonzaga continues its five-match home stand to start the season, welcoming UIC Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus, with live stats on GoZags.com.
