No. 14 TCU Outlasts Gonzaga, 2-1

Zags’ Lester scores first collegiate goal in the 77th minute

FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 14 TCU edged Gonzaga University 2-1 on Friday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
 
TCU (6-1-0) secured the win with goals in each half, while the Bulldogs managed to find the net once in the second half. The Horned Frogs' defense held strong, fending off eight shots from the Zags.
 
The first half opened with both teams testing each other's defenses, as GU's Samantha Snorsky and Amelia Severn attempted early shots. TCU responded with shots by Grace Coppinger and Emma Yolinsky, both saved by Gonzaga's Michaela McCollum. The match saw TCU capitalize on their offensive momentum when Seven Castain scored in the 26th minute, assisted by Grace Vest and Kamdyn Fuller, putting TCU ahead 1-0. Despite the Bulldogs' efforts, including a shot from Brooke Metcalfe, the half concluded with TCU maintaining their one-goal lead.
 
The second half started with TCU recording multiple shots and earning several corner kicks. McCollum made key saves, including a notable one against Castain in the 67th minute. The Bulldogs (2-5-0) leveled the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute with a goal by Olivia Lester, assisted by Severn. It was Lester's first collegiate goal and Severn's eighth career assists.
 
However, TCU quickly responded with a goal by Castain at 79:39, assisted by Cameron Patton and AJ Hennessey, to secure a 2-1 lead, which they held until the end of the half.
 
McCollum made seven saves in goal, facing 20 shots. Snorsky took three shots, with two on target, pushing the offensive front. Castain led TCU with two goals and was instrumental with seven shots, five of which were on goal. Kira Ybarra recorded two saves while facing eight shots, allowing only one goal during her 90 minutes of play.
 
Gonzaga remains on the road and is at Montana (3-2-1) Thursday at 3 p.m. Pacific Time. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus with live stats on GoZags.com.
