PORTLAND, Ore. — Gonzaga University (3-4-1, 0-1-0) was defeated by the University of Portland (7-0-1, 1-0-0) with a final score of 3-0 on Saturday at Merlo Field. Portland's offense was led by a three-goal performance, including a first-half goal. Despite the Bulldogs' efforts, including five saves by their goalkeeper, Portland, currently ranked #2 in the country, maintained their unbeaten record.
The first half commenced with both teams testing each other's defenses, but the Zags'
Chema Preciado was pivotal early, making multiple saves to keep the match level.
Robbie Mora and
Alex Bazia created chances for GU, resulting in corner opportunities, but the team was unable to capitalize.
Portland broke the deadlock in the 41st minute with a goal from Joe Highfield, assisted by Nikos Clarke-Tosczak and Micaah Garnette. Despite the Bulldogs' efforts to respond, the half concluded with Portland leading 1-0.
The second half began with Portland capitalizing early, scoring in the 54th minute through a goal by Diego Rosas, assisted by Anton Hjalmarsson, bringing the score to 2-0. Ethan Doud and Mora attempted to shift the momentum with shots on goal around the 60-minute mark, but Portland's goalkeeper Miguel-Angel Hernandez denied the efforts.
Preciado recorded five saves for the Bulldogs, with three in the first half and two in the second. Mora led the team in shots, taking two and putting one on goal. Doud and Bazia each took one shot, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
GU falls to 3-4-1 overall with a conference record of 0-1-0 following the loss. Portland improves to 7-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
