MISSION BAY, Calif. -- Gonzaga men's rowing turned in a strong opening day at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday, advancing all three boats to their respective Sunday finals.
In the Bill Weber Men's Collegiate 2V Memorial Cup 8+, the Bulldogs finished second in their heat with a time of 6:41.953, trailing only San Diego. Gonzaga followed with a convincing win in the Men's Collegiate Varsity 8+ Active&Fit Cal Cup Heat 2, crossing in 6:23.241 ahead of Embry-Riddle and UC Santa Barbara.
"I am pleased with the first race of the year. The water was a bit bumpy but they shook that off after the first 400 meters and started performing. Nice to have all three boats in the finals tomorrow,"Â head coach Dan Gehn said.
Gonzaga returns to Mission Bay on Sunday for the final day of competition. The Zags will race the Men's Collegiate Varsity 8+ Cal Cup Final A at 9:51 a.m., the Bill Weber Men's Collegiate 2V Memorial Cup Final A at 10:23 a.m., and the Men's Collegiate 3V 8+ Final at 10:55 a.m.
