SPOKANE, Wash- Gonzaga Baseball (13-13) secured another home win on Monday afternoon, defeating Nevada (16-10) by a score of 7-2.
Gabe Brabec had a great start to pick up the win, throwing a season high six innings and striking out a season high four batters. After giving up a run in the first inning he threw five straight scoreless innings, highlighted by a run of retiring eight straight batters.
Each team scored a run in the first inning, with Nevada scoring their leadoff man thanks to a double. The Zags tied the game in the bottom of the inning as a result of savvy baserunning, as an extended rundown on a fielder's choice allowed Mikey Bell to score before the out was recorded to end the inning.
The Zags had two different innings in which they scored three runs to extend their lead. Hudson Shupe hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. Ricky Sanchez then ripped a triple off of the right field wall, scoring two Zags while recording his first Division 1 triple.
Gonzaga extended the lead again in the eighth inning, using back to back doubles by Hudson Shupe and Landon White to score three more runs. Every Zag batter got on base today, and seven different Zags recorded at least one hit.
Garrett Gores picked up the long save, throwing for three innings and giving up just two hits. He allowed a single run on a home run while being the only reliever for GU on a very efficient afternoon of pitching.
This win moves head coach Mark Machtolf to just one win shy of tying coach Steve Hertz for the all time wins record for a Gonzaga Baseball head coach, he currently sits at 636. The team will look to break the record when they play a home weekend series with Pepperdine, with the first game scheduled to begin at 6pm on Thursday.
